Karen Nelson

Karen Nelson is an economist with over 25 years of experience in research, teaching, and design of informational, educational and training materials in all media. After teaching at Smith College for eight years, Karen established a her own business focused on custom work in training and documentation. She has worked for companies in a variety of industries, including healthcare, financial services, marketing communications, telecommunications, media sales, and high-tech.

Karen’s projects have ranged from producing updated training on integrated marketing communications for a global advertising agency, to creating a multi-part case study of a manufacturer’s new product development process, to drawing up technical notes on fiber optics, to preparing intranet training for the back office personnel of one of the world’s largest multinational banks. Other topics for which Karen has developed company-specific training and documentation include negotiation, coaching, strategic account management, and competitive intelligence.

To support assessment of business skills, Karen has collaborated on several projects that included development of custom assessment instruments. For example, a company needed a custom self-assessment instrument integrated into its coaching training. Karen worked closely with company experts to ensure that the content of the both the course and the assessment instrument focused accurately on relevant and significant behaviors.

For all audiences, industries, and topics, Karen’s emphasis is on defining clear, business-oriented goals for training and other performance support, and specific means of checking that the agreed goals have been met.

Karen is based in Northampton, Massachusetts.
